  4.     "The harm you are doing by espousing the `pro-choice' view will
  5. require great efforts to repair," San Diego Bishop Leo Maher wrote
  6. last week to Lucy Killea, 67, a Democrat running in a special
  7. election for California's state senate. He then applied a little
  8. used sanction that denies Communion to Catholics who "obstinately
  9. persist in manifest grave sin." Killea says she will abide by the
  10. decree but will not change her position. She is the first political
  11. candidate to receive this censure.

  13.     Catholics who take pro-choice stands have been particularly
  14. frustrating to the nation's bishops, who have been asked to respond
  15. decisively to dissenters. But a spokesman said it is highly
  16. unlikely that Maher's precedent would become national Catholic
  17. policy.
